New Recreation Assistant Named – The Recreation Committee today announced the appointment of Mrs. Mary Pomeroy as assistant director to fill the position recently vacated by Miss Pauline Grant. Mrs. Pomeroy has an impressive background of academic and field training in community work. Upon graduation from Westfield High School in Westfield, Mass., she entered American International College in Springfield, Mass., where she majored in Sociology with a minor in Psychology.
Elks Add Two More Victories To Record – The first and second teams of the Elks Women’s bowling club added another victory to their record by defeating Woodstock at their alleys here.
50 Years Ago, April 10, 1974
Dow is Named As Trustee For Police Academy– Houlton Police Chief Donald C. Dow has been appointed by Governor Kenneth M. Curtis to the Board of Trustees of the Maine Criminal Justice Academy in Waterville. Chief’s Dow’s term on the board will continue until August of 1975. The Academy serves as the official training school for law enforcement officers throughout Maine. Several members of the Houlton Police Department have taken courses at the Academy, either in basic training or for specialized training.
Twin Brothers Have Enlisted With Air Force – Two brothers from Houlton have enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. They are Brent and Kent Watson. They both enlisted in the Air Force’s Delayed Enlistment Program (DEP) and will go on Active duty April 29. They both enlisted for the same guaranteed job which is Munitions Maintenance Specialist. The Watson brothers both attended Houlton HIgh School.

Houlton High wins honors at jazz festival – Houlton High School took third place honors during the 1999 Maine State Jazz Festival held last weekend at Nokomis HIgh School in Newport. Houlton competed in the Division III category, where George Stevens Academy took first place and Stearns captured second place. There were 97 performing groups from 75 schools statewide at the event.
Graduates From Recruit Training– Jeremy P. Wedderman, son of Stephen and Pamela Tucker of Monticello, graduated on April 4, 1998 from recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C. During recruit training, Wedderman received instruction in physical fitness, military law, marksmanship and individual combat tactics.
