LIMESTONE, Maine – Limestone residents hope to brighten Main Street this holiday season with brand new Christmas decorations.
Seven community members, including those from the fire department, Rotary Club and Chamber of Commerce, have formed the Let’s Light Up Limestone committee. By December, the group wants to purchase either all or some of the lights that have decorated Main Street for over two decades.
The committee is asking residents to consider sponsoring a light and help the group raise enough funds to purchase at least 15 of the 30 lights needed from the town office to Access Highway. If successful, they could purchase all the lights, said committee member Patsy Poitras.
“We just want to bring some new color and freshen up Main Street this holiday season,” said Jon Poitras, Patsy’s son and fellow committee member. “We estimate that the current lights are at least 20 years old.”
During that time, 10 of the 20 lit wreaths adorning the streetlight poles have fallen down during wind storms. Others have dimmed and need to be replaced, Jon Poitras said.
New lights are estimated to cost $900 each and will come in various Christmas-themed shapes. All the lights will feature plaques identifying the donors and if the lights are in memory of somebody.
“If a family would like to buy a light in honor of a loved one but don’t have all the funds, families can sponsor together and share the costs,” Patsy Poitras said.
People wishing to donate can send checks to the Let’s Light Up Limestone Committee at 93 Main St. in Limestone, or contact Patsy Poitras or committee member Lisa Cantafio for more information at patsy.poitras@yahoo.com or lisa.cantafio@icloud.com.
