99 Years Ago – April 23, 1925
50,000 spawn of rainbow trout — Preliminary arrangements were made with the Fish and Game Commission whereby 50,000 spawn of rainbow trout were secured and placed in Madawaska lake. The spawn was looked after and taken care of until the proper time for transplanting in the lake at the caribou Fish Hatchery. The above program required a small amount of money to finance it.
50 Years Ago – April 24, 1974
Underwood was named an all American — Star center Chuck Underwood of the Northeast College Conference championship University of Maine at Presque Isle basketball team, added another achievement to his record, breaking accomplishments in the athletic world. He was named “All American” by the Sportswriters and Coaches Association of the United States. The son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas G. Underwood of Bath, and a former All-State forward from Morse High School, Underwood broke every major basketball scoring record at UMPI. He scored a personal game high performance of 40 points against Husson College, and averaged 25.8 points per game. Underwood was listed as one of the top five scorers in the nation, NCAA Division 3, for eleven straight weeks. He was named for the third straight year to the All-State Small College Team of Maine and was listed in the “Outstanding College Athletes of America.”
Portage local — Jack L. Sutherland of Portage received a Hovey Memorial Scholarship through the department of electrical engineering at the University ofMaine’s Orono campus. The $100 award was made each year to selected seniors from a fund established in 1932 by the Stone and Webster Corporation and its employees in honor of the late Francis J. Hovey. The selections were made on the basis of character, scholastic attainment and general promise as an engineer.

Interim president appointed — Nancy Hensel was introduced as the interim president of the University of Maine at Presque Isle by Chancellor Terry MacTaggart. Hensel, who was serving as vice president for academic affairs at the University of Maine at Farmington, met with UMPI staff and faculty at a reception at the university’s Campus Center. She took the reins of the school after W. Michael Easton retired. Hensel had been at UMF for four years, and served as a commissioner on the New England Association for Schools and Colleges and chaired the state advisory committee on the results-based initial teacher certification.
ACE skiers — Nick Robertson and Julie Chase were the 1999 Aroostook County middle school skimeisters for the ski meets which took place the previous month at Big Rock Ski Area and Fort Kent. Both Roberston and Chase were eighth-graders at Cunningham Middle School.SAD 20 named a new school superintendent — Fort Fairfield’s elementary school principal became the district’s new superintendent. Jeannette Condon was named to succeed Rodney Doody, who was in the process of retiring. Condon had been the district’s elementary school principal since 1986. Condon held a bachelor’s degree in secondary education, a master’s in reading and a certificate of advanced study in educational administration from the University of Maine. Before becoming a principal, Condon served as a special education instructor for SAD 20 and SAD 1 in Presque Isle.
