50 Years Ago — May 1, 1974
Ice perils Allagash bridge – THE Allagash bridge over the St. John River had a huge ice jam that threatened to destroy the bridge on April 24, 1974. But warm weather and gentle rains during the week melted the ice enough to break the jam and ease the pressure from the bridge. High water flooded parts of Allagash and St. Francis, forcing several residents to evacuate their homes and closing the Allagash School for a day or so.
25 Years Ago — May 5, 1999
Bourgoin is crowned – Angelique Bourgoin became the first junior ever to win the Miss Greater Madawaska Scholastic Pageant, sponsored by the Madawaska Optimist Club. She competed with four other women on a Sunday evening in 1999 at Madawaska High School before an audience of more than 350 people. The 17-year old also captured the best talent trophy with her vocal rendition of “Memory.” She aspires to go on to a good college to pursue a degree in psychology or education.

Morin to be ordained — An Upper Frenchville native is among three people to be ordained to the Catholic priesthood, according to a press release from the Portland Diocese. After graduating from Madawaska High School in 2002, Brad Morin, 30, attended Saint Joseph’s College, earning a bachelor of arts in philosophy in 2006. Morin, who is currently a deacon, will complete his master’s degree in theology this spring from St. Mary’s Seminary & University. Bishop Robert Deeley will celebrate Morin’s Mass of Priestly Ordination at the St. David Catholic Church on Friday, June 6, 2014.
