Hooked on Fishing is slated Saturday

In preparation for the Presque Isle Elks’ Hooked on Fishing, Not Drugs youth fishing derby, the Enfield hatchery of the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife will stock Mantle Lake in Presque Isle with 600 8- to 11-inch trout.

The Elks will host the 24th annual derby at the park on Saturday, June 1. Registration will go from 8 to 10 a.m., and fishing will be from 8 a.m. to noon.

The derby is open to all youth from 3 to 15 years old. Every young angler who registers must be accompanied by a responsible, supervising adult.

The participant who catches the longest fish can choose from a wide array of prizes, including a lifetime fishing license donated by the Aroostook Sportsman Association, a sister organization of the Presque Isle Fish and Game Club. Every registered contestant will win an outdoor activity prize of their choice.

Adults accompanying a registered young angler will also be eligible to win prizes,

including a weekend stay at a lakeside cabin and a season pass for the North Maine Woods.

Participants who want to fish but don’t have their own poles can receive a beginner’s fishing rod and reel to keep. 

Grilled hot dogs, chips, juice, ice cream and water will be served. Everything is provided free of charge by the Elks and sponsors.
