HOULTON, Maine — The Northern Maine Moose hosted the team’s debut playoff lacrosse game against the Waynflete School of Portland in Houlton on June 4, an unfortunate 15-8 loss for the Moose but a great game played by both teams. The back and forth scoring gave great entertainment for the large crowd. The Moose had an outstanding third period scoring three goals and holding Waynflete to zero goals.
Moose goal scorers were Isaiah Ervin four goals, two assists; Brandon Barton two goals; Colton Simoes a goal and an assist; and Konnor Lynds a goal and an assist.
Simoes, faceoff specialist, had an amazing game dominating with 78 percent of the faceoffs against Waynflete. Simoes also dominated groundballs, 13 for the day.
Goalie Dawson Cole had a 73 percent save ratio. An amazing showing considering Cole just started and learned lacrosse this season and stepped into the role of goalie two days before the season opener. Cole was slated to be a star defender but ended up rising to the top and becoming the star goalie for the Northern Main Moose.
Coach Simoes would like to thank all the players, especially the seniors for their hard work and dedication. He would also like to thank the community for their support, the parents for their support and willingness to assist the team.
Simoes goes on to say, “This is a great achievement for the team in their second year as a varsity lacrosse team.
“We earned a playoff position with home field advantage. We learned so much this year. We will take this experience and continue to grow the program. We have great middle school players coming up the ranks. Looking further to the future we have great fifth and sixth grade players interested in lacrosse and showing that they will be competitive in the future. I look forward to coaching them.
“We have dedicated parents and volunteer coaches helping the success of the program. I am appreciative of their time and sacrifice. I will be scouting at their middle school game Sunday in Houlton.
“We’re so thankful for the high school coaching staff Ken Ervin, and our new assistant coach John Vernon who bring great knowledge and experience to these players. Thank you to Houlton High School for allowing this team the opportunity to succeed.”
