Pat Cyr is queen candidate – The last time Madawaska had a candidate in the Maine Potato Blossom Festival at Fort Fairfield, Madawaska came up with a winner. That was in 1957, when Charlene Pelletier was crowned Maine’s Potato Blossom Queen in the Festival Pageant. It looks like Madawaska might have another winner this year: Patricia Ann “Pat” Cyr, daughter of Mrs. Yolande Desmarais and Philip Cyr of Madawaska, who will be sponsored by Madawaska Chamber of Commerce in this year’s Maine Potato Blossom Pageant set for July 20, 1974.

25 Years Ago — June 23, 1999

High jump – Madawaska Elementary School’s Kevin Dufour received awards from the American Heart Association for his outstanding effort during this year’s Jump Rope for Heart activity. Dufour was the highest money raiser for the state of Maine among all of the state’s students who participated. The fourth grade raised more than $600. Presenting Dufour the award was event coordinator Catherine Smith.

Churning back time — The chore of turning cream into butter was a part of everyday life for some residents of the St. John Valley not that many years ago. Artifacts from different eras of those bygone years are on display at the Acadian Village in Van Buren; and on Sunday, so was butter-making. Members of the Friends of the Acadian Village organization, a group of volunteers who collaborate with the historic site’s director to offer activities, were at the village demonstrating butter and soap-making, and how to make all-natural cleaners.
