Probus hears from city manager

The Probus Club of Aroostook met May 16 at Northern Maine Community College in Presque Isle.

Kim Smith, resource development and public information officer for Presque Isle, introduced City Manager Tyler Brown as the guest speaker.

After four months in his new position, Brown is busy attempting to learn all he can about the city’s history, its present needs and future goals. He spoke about the dog park near Peace Park.

He has found that Presque Isle is a city of doers with many volunteers, citing the recent community cleanup day. The city is financially sound and the hub of Aroostook County, said, noting that he has an outstanding support team in city hall.

Goals for upcoming years include completion of the bypass in 2027, the downtown redesign in 2028 and the new airport terminal. The airport is an essential service which is provided with subsidy to make sure that small communities continue to maintain service to the residents, Brown said.

The eclipse saw an increase in visitors, up to 4,000, with several jets bringing in those seeking a perfect spot to watch the event. Tourism is important to The County and more visitors continue to come for winter and summer fun, he said.

Presque Isle has a housing shortage need, but presently there is no area large enough for a housing subdivision. In order for builders to be encouraged to start housing projects they need guarantees for successful profits, Brown said.

He told the group the many solar fields visible around PI have not been started up yet due to Versant Power’s full work schedule. These solar fields are subsidized.

Brown hopes to see growth and prosperity for Presque Isle. He welcomes all citizens to call on him at city hall any time.

Probus Club meets regularly and includes retired and semi-retired business people who value increased social contacts and opportunities to meet others, hold discussions and hear addresses on topical subjects. New members are welcome.
