This summer the Star City’s Recreation department will have more fun lined up than we ever have before.
Starting with your tiny tots, toddler time will continue throughout the summer to provide a safe place for your little ones to run around and meet new friends. Gearing up outside, 3- to 5-year-olds will now have the ability to get involved. Little Sports Stars and Lil’ Shredders started just for them.
Speaking of shredding, we will now offer biking classes for all ages, from 3 years old all the way to 12th grade. Also new this summer is street and roller hockey, located at “The Cage” on Skyway Drive. Kids from K-9th grade will have the ability to keep up with their hockey techniques as we dive into the world of street and roller hockey.
Hockey not your thing? Try your hand at baseball or softball. Bishops Island Baseball Field will see over 150 kiddos this summer while our girls take over the Presque Isle High School softball field. Junior girls softball and baseball’s Pony League will get the chance to travel up and down The County to compete against other local rec departments for the NMCRA first-place title.
Still not sure what to do? Mantle Lake Park will now have tennis and pickleball courts for all ages. Are you someone who wants to learn to play pickleball but haven’t had the right class come your way? Look no further. We’ll be offering an adult learn to play clinic in June, with a youth program starting up just for the summer.
If you’re not into sports, we have gardening club starting up again in full force with plans to grow even more veggies and flowers. These participants will also get the chance to volunteer at City Hall on a landscape beautification project and see their hard work be admired for years to come.
We have events for adults and seniors too. Ladies Trail Night will be starting up again, every Monday at 6 p.m. at the Nordic Heritage Outdoor Center. Summer basketball is in full force with pick-up games being played every Tuesday night from 6 to 8 p.m., while our new Dad Bod League (for guys over 30) has two games under their belt and will continue throughout the summer on Thursdays from 6 to 8 p.m. If you have a chance to watch, swing on in.
Senior Music Jam is still jammin’ every Wednesday from 12 to 3 p.m. at the Sargent Family Community Center, and Bridge meets every Friday at 12:30 p.m. Tai Chi is going strong and now meeting outside at Riverside or Mantle Lake Park on Wednesdays or Fridays from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.
