50 Years Ago – July 24, 1974
‘First Lady’ greets the crowd — Patricia Nixon greeted the crowd during President Nixon’s refueling layover at Loring Air Force Base in Limestone, July 3, 1974. Loring was the president’s first stop on return from summit talks in the Soviet Union. He gave a nationally televised talk to the nation from the SAC base. Also in attendance were Vice President Gerald Ford; Ford’s daughter; Julie Nixon Eisenhower; and lots of Secret Service agents, who were busily scanning the crowd during the president’s 20-minute speech and more so during handshaking trips into the crowd.
25 Years Ago – July 28, 1999
Eagle Lake loon counters tally birds — Fifteen Eagle Lake residents volunteered their time bright and early Saturday, July 17, 1999, to count their hometown loons. From 7-7:30 a.m., the volunteers scoured Eagle Lake in search of the birds, coming up with a total of 29 after the half-hour was over.
10 Years Ago – July 23, 2014
Bridge welcomes traffic — The new international bridge connecting Fort Kent and Clair, New Brunswick is on schedule and will be open to traffic on July 31, 2014, according to Jennifer Paul, a construction manager at the Maine Department of Transportation’s Multimodal Program. Contactors recently installed two new U.S. Customs and Border Protection inspection booths and a new canopy. One of the booths has a high window designed for easier interaction with drivers of large commercial vehicles.
