75 Years Ago – August 4, 1949

Evelyn H. Pearce Leaves Library After 43 Years Service — Miss Evelyn H. Pearce, who has been connected with the Cary Library here since 1906 and who has been Librarian since 1928, yesterday tendered her resignation to the board of trustees after 43 years of continuous service to the institution.

Playground Holds Vehicle Parade — A very successful Vehicle Parade took place at the Playground Tuesday afternoon of last week. There were 20 entries of trimmed bicycles, tricycles, doll carriages, scooters and carts by the boys and girls. The boys and girls trimmed their own vehicles and did a good job. There were some original arrangements. There were also a group of boys dressed as cowboys. There were: Robert Fowler, Ronny Steele, Gary Benn, Stephen Bishop, and Peter Caldwell. The parade was led by the playground band consisting of musical combs and kettle drums.

50 Years Ago – July 31, 1974

Class of 1964 Gathers For Picnic, Dinner And Dance — The Houlton High School class of 1964 observed its 10th reunion June 29. The day’s activities included a class picnic at the camp of Mr. and Mrs. Clayton Niles at Drews Lake from 10 a.m., to 4 p.m., and a buffet dinner at the Houlton Lodge of Elks, followed by dancing, with music provided by Rod Palmer’s band in the evening. George Biles, President of the class, served as master of ceremonies for the evening program. Guest for the evening was Mrs. Mildred Rutledge, a class advisor. Recognition gifts were presented by Patricia Wolhaupter, secretary of the class, to Nicholas Gravelle for traveling the greatest distance, Robert Decker for changing the most, Mary Carson Bickford for changing the least, and Karen Cyr Gallop for having the most children.

Nason’s Station Wins Annual Softball Tourney — An estimated 700 people attended the slow pitch softball tournament last weekend at Community Park. Nason’s Station of Houlton captured first place with a 15-14 win in the final game Sunday against Loring Air Force Base. Nason’s went undefeated, 5-0, to win the tournament and Loring finished second with a 4-2 record for the two-day affair. Coming in third  was Youngs Raiders of Mars Hill winning three, losing two, and another Houlton team. First National Bank Bombers captured fourth place with four wins and two losses. The leading hitter was Doug Cameron who went 11 for 13 and Darrell Glidden was the leading home run hitter with 11 to his credit. Both players are on Nason’s team. Nason’s has also won the town league championship with a 15-1 record for the season. They are entered in two more tournaments scheduled for the week of August 17 at Monticello and in Bangor on Labor Day. Other teams competing were Scott of Bangor, Hotel Terrace of Millinocket, Dave’s Market of Houlton, Stegners of Caribou, Houlton Jaycees, Patten, Hodgdon, Brownville Jct., Lee, Yorks of Houlton and Caribou.

25 Years Ago – August 4, 1999

Houlton Border Patrol Nets Blueberry Workers — A special operation set up by the United States Border Patrol targeted routes of travel leading to the blueberry barrens of eastern Maine. The routes were identified by the U.S. Border Patrol as routes frequently used by migrant workers, many of whom are illegally in the United States. The operation netted 68 undocumented workers.

Fishing Derby Draws 80 — Last Saturday, Louisiana Pacific’s Special Events Team held its second fishing derby with proceeds to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation on Mattawamkeag Lake as part of the Island Falls Summerfest. More than 80 fishermen entered the event, with prizes and trophies being presented by Scott Shaffer. The event raised more than $900 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
