75 Years Ago – August 4, 1949
Eight Local Students On U. of M. Dean’s List — Eight Houlton students were among 927 named to the Dean’s List for the spring semester at the University of Maine, according to an announcement issued by the University. In order to be named to the Dean’s list a student must receive grades of B or better in each course. Those from the Houlton area named to the Dean’s list are as follows: Henry L. Whited, Forest J. Stewart, Keith M. Fortier, Joyce M. Henderson, Helen M. Cumming, Alston R. Bell, Jerome J. Clifford, Gennette E. MacNair, all of Houlton.
Louis P. Abrams to Join Houlton Chamber Staff — Chauncey Robbins and his successor as secretary of the Houlton Chamber of Commerce, Louis Abrams, will both attend the annual session of the Northeastern Institute for Chamber of Commerce personnel to be held at Yale University next week, it was announced today by Frank Totman, president of the Chamber. Robbins, who has attended the Institute for the last three summers, graduating in 1948, is returning as a member of the faculty.
50 Years Ago – August 7, 1974
Nursing School Will Graduate Two Area Girls — Linda J. Bates and Karen Putnam will be among 38 students who will graduate from the Central Maine General Hospital School of Nursing at Lewiston on August 15. Miss Bates is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Bates of Hodgdon. Miss Putnam is the daughter of the Rev. and Mrs. Lynwood Putnam of Houlton.
Return from Capital — Tanya Marshall, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Marshall of Hodgdon, and David Knowles, son of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Knowles of Hodgdon, returned Saturday from Washington, D.C. where they attended a week-long citizenship short course. They were included in two busloads of youth and adults from Maine who attended with some 600 delegates from other states.

Houlton Boys Are “King of the Hill” — Two Houlton boys made their claim as kings of the soap box derby by capturing top honors in the Caribou Derby Race, held Saturday down the Glenn Street hill. Ryan Aucoin took the stock division, while Levi Cyr won the super stock title in the event, which was held in conjunction with the Caribou Cares About Kids Celebration.
Local Student Participates in National Talent Search — Natasha Bither, seventh-grade student at Houlton Junior High School, and daughter of Sheila Bither of Houlton, participated in the John Hopkins University Talent Search. This program identifies, assesses and recognizes students with exceptional mathematical and/or verbal reasoning abilities. Students are identified for participation in the talent search by scoring at or above the 97th percentile in a nationally-normed standardized aptitude or achievement test.
