115 Years Ago – Jan. 29, 1902

Team Arrangements are being made to secure for our town a good ball team and a meeting of ball cranks will soon be held, when a board of directors will be chosen for the Caribou Baseball Association, after which a manager for the nine will be selected.

100 Years Ago – Feb. 1., 1917

Appreciation An increasing number of the people of Caribou are appreciating the fine moving picture entertainments that are being presented at the high school auditorium from week to week.

Back to school — Schools resumed their sessions Monday after a couple days’ vacation, the teachers having been in attendance at the teachers’ convention in Houlton.

75 Years Ago – Jan. 29, 1942

Evening school — On Monday evening, February 2 at 7 p.m., Supt. James A. Hamlin, Principal John A. Partridge and a part of the high school faculty will meet in the auditorium of Caribou High School with towns-people interested in forming an evening school. All those people who have signified their intentions of joining such an organization and others who care to are invited to attend this meeting.

Office in Hackett Building — An office and information bureau has been established by the Caribou Winter Carnival Committee in room 3 of the Hackett Building. Miss Iva Gahagan will be at the office every day to handle the necessary secretarial work and information pertaining to events, entries, etc. Telephone connections will be made ready within the next few days.

50 Years Ago – Feb. 1, 1967

Early approval — Word that Caribou’s Urban Renewal Workable Plan might win approval within three months was received Tuesday. If this were to prove so, some of the downtown parking problems might be solved within a relatively short time, it was theorized in official town circles. If the plan receives approval, this could mean the immediate face-lifting might being in the section bordered by Main and Prospect streets, east and west, and Herschel and Sweden streets, north and south.

Success Delicate open heart surgery performed on a 9-year-old Yvonne Addington, foster daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wilfred Jalbert of Caribou, was pronounced successful at the Maine Medical Center Tuesday. Yvonne was still in the recovery room, the surgeon told the Jalberts, but he said her condition was “good.” She is expect to remain under in intensive care until Friday or Saturday and may return home in about two weeks.

25 Years Ago – Jan. 29, 1992

Water, sewer rates remain unchanged Rates in 1992 for Caribou’s water and sewer users will remain the same for the fifth consecutive year since 1987 because of an increase in revenues, a tightening of the system and expanded water metering. Caribou Utilities District trustees Jan. 22 approved a $717,000 annual water works budget, u p$22,181 from the amount project for 1991. Estimated water works income amounts to $756,000 for the new year.
