Presque Isle High School athletes honored at awards ceremony

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — Presque Isle High School’s winter athletic awards were presented Tuesday, March 21, 2017. Participants in cheering, swimming, skiing, hockey and basketball were honored during the evening.

Coaches met with their respective teams as part of the evening, which also included the presentation of league all-star and all-academic awards and a slideshow highlighting photographs taken of all the teams throughout the season.

Other special awards were given out. Griffin Guerrette, Kiara Lyford, Emily Wheaton and Maddie Wing, who each earned six varsity letters, were presented sweatshirts. Student-athletes receiving four letters in the same sport receive jackets, and recipients were Leigh Buck (swimming), Emily Lagerstrom (basketball) and John Saucier (skiing). Nick Bartlett was eligible for a jacket in skiing but had already received his in the fall for soccer.

Denny Young was recognized as the Presque Isle hockey team’s Hobey Baker Award recipient. The Presque Isle boys’ basketball team was named the winner of the IAABO 150 Sportsmanship Award banner. Grant Bridges received a letter for being the “Paws” mascot throughout the winter.

Kelsie Spooner, coach of the varsity cheering squad, handed out a certificate to junior Autumn Gray, first-year letters to freshmen Hana Boucher, Jayde Cook, Taylor Hedrich, Clark Kohlbacher, Sophia Lambert, Claire Mautz, Alexis Moro, Rebekah Poliero and Erica Rosten and sophomores Miranda Drost and Emma Kohlbacher; second-year letters to juniors Jessica Boucher and Kiara Lyford and third-year letters to seniors Justine LaBier and Victoria Williamson.

Erica Hemphill, a coach for the Carlisle co-op swim team, gave PIHS junior swimmers Libbee Currie, Elizabeth Deschenes and Maddie Wing third-year letters and senior Leigh Buck a fourth-year letter.

Nordic ski coach Von Perry presented a first-year letter to freshman Connor Albertson; second-year letters to sophomores Garrett Morneault and Thomas Popov; and third-year letters to juniors Isabelle Jackson and Max Bartley.

Scott Smith, coach of the alpine ski team, awarded certificates to freshman Alec Staples, sophomore Seth Roy and junior manager McKenzie Turner; first-year letters to freshman Riley Roderick and sophomores Zechariah Morse and Grace Bemis; second-year letters to sophomores Sheridan Boucher, Eleanor St. Peter, Kyler Caron and Thomas Popov and junior Natalie Bates; a third-year letter to junior Chandler Paradis; and fourth-year letters to seniors Nick Bartlett and John Saucier.

Coach Carl Flynn and assistant Darren Carlisle honored members of the varsity hockey team. Freshman Jacob Foster and sophomores Owen McQuarrie and manager Brook Moreau earned certificates, while freshmen Bryce Bonville, Colby Bonville, Connor Demerchant and Carter Jackson and sophomore Andre Daigle earned first-year letters. Sophomores Riley Kinney, Torey Levesque, Thomas Patenaude and Jake Stevens; juniors Devin Ireland and Isaac Madore; and seniors Denny Young and manager Alaina Sweetser were all presented second-year letters.

On behalf of JV II basketball coach David Whitaker, Greg Whitaker presented certificates to freshmen Gavin Akeley, Tyus Ambrose, Sam Beaulieu, Jacob Bonville, Colby Buckley, Ethan Cassidy, Noah Flynn, Blake Inman, Jaden MacDonald, Joseph Michaud and Nathan Willett and sophomores Kyle Fulton, Mark Graves and Andrew Hewitt.

Tim McCue, who coaches the girls’ JV basketball team, gave certificates to freshmen Allison Himes, Alana Legassie, Libby Moreau, Elizabeth Nadeau, Elise Nelson, Rebecca Rider and Anna Trombley; sophomores Elizabeth Collins, Kamryn Gilmour, Julia Good, Madison Jandreau, Lydia Miller and manager Sara Beaulieu; and junior Megan Butler.

The coach of the boys’ JV basketball team, Ron McAtee, presented certificates to freshmen Caleb Wheaton and managers Harleigh Brewer and Karlie Voisine; sophomores William Bridges, Raekwon Gray, Nagoo Morey, Cole Paterson, Carter Rice, Iffy Sargent and Jacob Sjoberg and juniors Jack Beaulieu, Jordan Bonville, Sam Hebert and Cameron Lahey.

Girls’ varsity head coach Jeff Hudson and assistant coach Ralph Michaud handed out certificates to freshman Libby Moreau, sophomores Madison Jandreau and Sydney Thompson and junior manager Jaida Beaulieu; first-year letters to sophomores Molly Kingsbury and Madison Michaud, juniors Kasey Haley and Chrissy Skidgel and senior Tori Koch and manager Macy Pyres; second-year letters to sophomore Savannah Rodriguez and seniors Meg Boone and Skylar Vogel; a third-year letter to junior Emily Wheaton; and a fourth-year letter to senior Emily Lagerstrom.

Members of the boys’ varsity basketball team, under head coach Terry Cummings and assistant coach Greg Whitaker, were also cited for their participation this winter. Sophomores Trace Cyr and Carter Rice and manager Libby Boone and juniors Jack Beaulieu, Jack Bonville and manager Emma Willett received certificates. Seniors Patrick Cash, Jake Kinney and Marcus Ouellette earned first-year letters; while sophomores Jason Dumais and Jonah Hudson and seniors Bradley Kinney and manager Madison Fournier garnered second-year letters. Junior Griffin Guerrette was presented a third-year letter.
