Things You Can Learn From Your Dog

Hello out there. Dare I say, spring is just around the corner.  Spring is coming, people, be patient.

I seem always to write about dogs. I have written a few stories on cats and other critters, but dogs are my faves.

“A dog loves you more than they love themselves” — I love that quote.  They are always happy to see you, no matter what kind of mood you are in, and they brighten the day. I love hearing the happy stories of rescues that happen at our little shelter. They are often very heartwarming.

If you have visited our Facebook page, you may have seen some updated photos of Charlie, the shepherd that was rescued at the Presque Isle Fish and Game Club a few months back. He has a wonderful new home and family. He is one lucky dog.  I also have a friend who rescued a dog a few months back from the Central Aroostook Humane Society.  This dog is so happy and content in her new home; she is such a good girl and is loved very much.

Recently on Facebook, I have seen several photos and comments from families who have adopted cats and what great pets they have become. This always touches me and makes my heart happy.

There is so much we can learn from our dogs, and looking through one of my favorite books about dogs, “Planet Dog: A Doglopedia” by Sandra and Harry Chorom, I found some great lessons I thought you may enjoy reading. If we are lucky and take the time to appreciate our dogs, we can learn a great deal of wisdom from them.

Lessons from a dog:

When loved ones come home, always run to greet them.

Play every chance you get.

Be loyal.

Lounge under a tree in the shade on a hot day.

Never pretend to be something you’re not.

Don’t hold a grudge.

Never underestimate the power of praise.

Scratch when and where it itches.

Protect and defend the people you love.

Avoid biting when a simple growl will do.

There are so many things we can learn from our pets.  If you are looking for that furbaby to call your own, come visit us at the Central Aroostook Humane Society at 26 Cross Street in Presque Isle. Our hours of operation are Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., closed for lunch from 12 to 12:30.

Please be responsible: Spay and neuter your pets.
