Caribou squads capture indoor soccer tourney titles

CARIBOU, Maine — The Caribou Parks and Recreation Department hosted its fifth annual indoor soccer tournament for high school-aged players on Saturday, March 25. Six girls’ teams and eight boys’ teams participated and host Caribou won both divisions. 

Teams played 10-minute round-robin games before entering the seeded tournament bracket.  

The girls played in the morning, with single teams from Presque Isle and Madawaska and two teams each from Fort Kent and Caribou competing. In bracket play, Madawaska topped Warriors Green in the first game, while Warriors White nipped Vikings Maroon in game two.

Presque Isle entered bracket play as the top-seeded team but fell to Madawaska in the first semifinal. Vikings White also enjoyed a bye and outscored Warriors White to reach the title game.

Viking White’s Gabby Marquis scored the lone goal as her team beat Madawaska, 1-0, to take the tournament champioship. Members of the winning team were Emily Adler, Danielle Hanson, Maddie Doucette, Kerrigan Manter, Zoe Gerakaris, Ashley Matlock, Hope Shea, Monica McLaughlin and Marquis.

In the boys’ tournament that afternoon, single teams from Houlton, MSSM, Fort Kent and Fort Fairfield and two teams from both Presque Isle and Caribou got in the action.

In the bracketed round, Houlton beat MSSM, 2-0; Fort Kent lost to Presque Isle B, 3-1; Fort Fairfield stopped Presque Isle A, 1-0; and Caribou I outlasted Caribou II, 3-1.

Houlton and Presque Isle B met in the first semifinal game with Presque Isle B picking up the 2-1 victory. Fort Fairfield and Caribou I squared off in an outstanding contest. The game needed overtime and two rounds of penalty kicks before being decided, with Caribou I advancing by a score of 6-5. Caribou goalie Noah Hixon made an incredible save to seal the deal.

Caribou I then played Presque Isle B in the championship game, which also tied to the finish and had to be determined by penalty kicks. The Caribou squad prevailed, 3-2.

Members of the Caribou I team included Cullin Caverhill, Nic Sleeper, Brandon Manter, Alex Ezzy, Austin Cheplic and Hixon.
