Houlton Rec lists vacation activities

HOULTON, Maine — The following activities will be offered to Houlton area youth throughout the April vacation break.

Vacation Fun Days

This program will be held on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, April 18-20, from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Rec Center. Each day will be filled with games, contests and crafts. Children in grades pre-K-5 are invited to sign up. Cost is $5 per day per child. Registration is required with a minimum of 10 /maximum of 24 children per day. To register, call 532-1310 by April 11, 2015.

Babysitting course

On Thursday, April 20, from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., youth between the ages of 11-15 can be certified in the Red Cross Babysitting course.

The cost for this course is $50. Class is limited to the first 12 students to register; there must be six to offer the class. Participants must bring their own lunch and drink.

Here is a great opportunity to get the knowledge, skills and confidence to take care of infants and children. To register, call 532-1310 by April 11.

Pillowcase Project

New this April vacation, the Red Cross will offer the Pillowcase Project for youth in grades 3-5 on Friday, April 21, from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Houlton Rec Center.

This free program is sponsored by Disney. The Pillowcase Project is a preparedness education program that teaches students about personal and family preparedness and safely skills for local hazards and basic coping skills. The Red Cross volunteer will lead students through a “learn, practice, share” framework to engage them in disaster preparedness and survival skills.

Upon completion, students receive a sturdy pillowcase in which to build their personal emergency supplies kit.

Gym and game room

For April vacation, the schedule for open gym and game room will be Saturday, April 15, through Sunday, April 23, 1-4 p.m. The facility has a gym, pool tables, pingpong tables, bubble hockey, air hockey, foosball and many board games.

Youth must be in grades 2-12 to attend these open times. If younger, they must be accompanied by an adult.
