100 Years Ago – Apr. 5, 1917
Farmer donation — O.B. Griffin, well known farmer of Green Ridge, sent last week a donation of 400, 100-lb. Bags of potatoes for distribution to the unemployed in Boston. The potatoes are being distributed to the unemployed in Boston. The potatoes are being distributed by the officials of the Salvation Army from the Hoosac Storage Warehouse Co., where they are held without charges to the needy of Boston and vicinity.
75 Years Ago – Apr. 1, 1942
Clerk dead —Walter Braden Clark, 59, died Tue. March 31 after serving 30 years as deputy clerk and later County clerk of courts. Clark succeeded his father, Michael M. Clark, who died 18 years ago. He was a graduate of Bowdoin College in 1906, a past president of the Maine Clerks of Court Association, a member of the Houlton Masonic Lodge, Lions Club and Unitarian church.
Soldier at Cavalry school — Pvt. Edward O. Griffin, whose home is at Caribou, Maine, Route 5, has reported to the world’s largest Cavalry School in Ft. Riley, Kas. While at the Cavalry School, Pvt. Griffin will receive a modern course of instruction in the Motors School.
50 Years Ago – Apr. 5, 1967
Coldest spot — The weekend’s brief taste of warm spring weather ended suddenly about noon Monday when the mercury, which had registered 49 degrees at 11 a.m. suddenly plummeted downward nine degrees in the hour until noon-time and continued to drop until it reached a low of eight degrees during the night. Wind gusts up to 30 to 35 miles per hour continued through the night.
New S&H Center — The Sperry and Hutchinson Company, distributor of S&H Green Stamps, has announced that it will expand redemption facilities here with the opening of its new center at 26 Access Highway on April 6. The local redemption center has been located a t 53 Herschel St. since 1955. According to Charles Daskalos, district store store operations manager, the new center will be more than twice the size of the company’s former redemption center.
25 Years Ago – Apr. 1, 1992
Mr. Caribou crowned — Caribou High School freshman Joey Cowett was crowned 1992 Mr. Caribou, at last Saturday evening’s pageant at the Caribou Performing Arts Center. He is the 15-year-old son of Rol and and Vicki Cowett of Caribou. His pageant escort was Danielle Lombard.
Scooping it up — Assistant superintendent Arthur Benner and Superintendent Irvin Belanger served ice cream sundaes to Caribou Middle School eighth-graders Monday to reward them for scoring above the state average in all six categories of the Maine Educational Assessment test. This is the second consecutive year that this has been accomplished by CMS eighth-grade students.
