AROOSTOOK COUNTY, Maine — Municipal Clerks Week will be celebrated this year May 7-13.
The week has been observed since 1969. In 1984 and in 1994, Presidents Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton, respectively, signed a proclamation officially declaring Municipal Clerks Week the first full week of May and recognizing the essential role such officials play in local government.
Among their many duties, clerks may: maintain official council minutes and records, issue licenses and permits, keep community history and vital records, administer elections and act as a liaison between local government and citizens.
Today, modern technology assists clerks with their increasing responsibilities.
