Ashland martial arts students do well at tournament

    Students from the Graves Institute of Self Defense, Ashland branch, recently competed in Tracey’s Fall Ketsugo Karate Tournament Oct. 17 in Ellsworth. The students not only received recognition for their efforts and contributions to the martial arts, but competed in tournament competitions. Awards were given in the following categories:

    Most Dedicated – April Godsoe, Best Attitude – Alysea Sutherland and Most Supportive Parents went to Mr. and Mrs. Roland Harris. Placement in the tournament competitions were as follows: Grand Champion, Kumite/Boys ages 9-10 (white and yellow belt division) Brandon Dorr; Grand Champion, Kumite/Girls ages 11-13 (green, purple, brown and black belt division) Brittany Harris. “Kumite” means sparring and is one of the three main essential sections of karate training.
    Graves Institute of Self Defense’s Ashland Dojo, under the guidance of Sensei Dave Ash, meets every Thursday evening from 6-8 p.m. in the multi-purpose room in the Ashland Central School. Those interested in physical and mental well-being, along with instruction in self defense, kata and jujitsu, are welcome for class. Please contact Sensei Dave Ash for more information.
St. Mark’s Christmas Sale and Luncheon This Saturday
    St. Mark’s Parish will be holding its annual Christmas sale in the Parish Hall Saturday, Nov. 21 from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. There will be food, crafts, knit goods, a new selection of RADA cutlery and candles. Raffle tickets will be sold for various items such as a Christmas wreath, SLAH Santos Angels, an afghan and more! The luncheon hours will be from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. The menu includes salmon chowder, beef stew, chicken stew and homemade biscuits with pie for dessert. The cost will be $6 for adults and $3 for children under 12. Come on out and support one of our local churches while getting some goodies for others and yourself!
Ashland PTO Family Movie Night
    The Ashland Area PTO will be hosting a Family Movie Night Friday, Nov. 20 at the Ashland Central School gym. The featured film is Disney Pixar’s “UP” which was rated the number-one animated film of the year and is a great movie for all ages. Popcorn, drinks and healthy snacks will be provided for the viewing audience. Ashland Central School students who attend will be entered into a chance drawing – the prize being a copy of the movie. Finally, there will be balloons for the children to take home at the end of the evening. The show will begin at 7 p.m. sharp, so bring your pillows and blankets and come early to get a good seat. Students must be accompanied by a parent or guardian in order to be admitted.
