Despite not being able to get outside for practice, the Presque Isle tennis teams are on the road Saturday, April 15 for their first regular season matches of the season.

The Wildcats are in Dover-Foxcroft to square off against the Foxcroft Academy Ponies at noon.

“We have not set foot on a real court yet and it may be a good week or so more before we can,” said PI boys’ coach Brian Massey.

Caribou has had limited court availability, utilizing two of the four courts at Teague Park in recent days. The Vikings also have their first match on Saturday, April 15, on the road against John Bapst in Bangor.

“We have only been on the courts twice and we will get a little time in today,” said Viking coach John Habeeb. “[It is] not an ideal way to start our season.”

These are the first countable contests for local schools in any sport this spring. The first day of tryouts was March 27.

Next week is vacation week, so some area schools have baseball and softball teams competing in exhibition contests in southern Maine, or in the case of the Presque Isle baseball team, in sunny Florida. The Wildcats embarked on Wednesday, April 12 and return Wednesday, April 19.

The first track and field meets are being planned for later next week. On Thursday, April 20, Fort Fairfield, Caribou and the Maine School of Science and Mathematics compete in Brewer, while on Friday, April 21, Presque Isle is scheduled for a meet at Hampden Academy.

Caribou resumes its tennis slate on Saturday, April 22 with another road match, this time in East Machias against Washington Academy.

Regular season baseball and softball gets underway on Saturday, April 22. The PI teams are playing John Bapst at the University of Maine at Orono in a doubleheader set to begin at noon. Caribou is at Old Town for two games, also beginning at noon.

The Central Aroostook softball team is also slated for an away doubleheader in Eastport against Shead. First pitch of the first game is scheduled for 1 p.m.
