DOVER FOXCROFT, Maine — The Presque Isle High School tennis teams’ first time on an outdoor court was also the Wildcats’ first match of the season.
Given the circumstances, PI fared well in its April 15 contests against the Foxcroft Academy Ponies.
The PI boys picked up a 3-2 victory, while the girls lost by the same score.
Coach Brian Massey’s Wildcats took advantage of an FA team that was without a couple starters who were away on vacation.
Mason Young was Presque Isle’s lone singles winner, taking the No. 3 singles match over R.J. Nelson, 8-5. The Wildcats also won both doubles matches. PI’s Gage Young and Isaac Madore beat Andrew Miles and Dorian Yang, 8-1, while Brandon McKnight and Austin Moreau prevailed in second doubles by forfeit.
In the other singles matches, Andre Daigle fell to Boija Yang, 8-3, while Jordan Bonville lost to Brandon Weston, 9-7.
The PI girls collected their wins in first singles and No. 2 doubles. Sarah Morneault outlasted the Ponies’ Hannah Vainia, 8-5, while Hana Boucher and Gabby Haley eased past Foxcroft’s Sue Kim and Virginia Macomber, 8-1.
Miranda Bragan of the Wildcats fell by a close 8-6 decision to Maria Batalla in second singles, while PI’s Anna Robinson and Ellie Goheen dropped their first doubles match by the same score to Emily Curtis and Heather Burgess. With only six players on the roster, the ’Cats had to forfeit their third singles match.
“It was the first time playing on courts and you never know how the girls will play under those conditions, but they did a lot better than I expected,” said PI girls coach Monica Bearden, “especially with serves since we hadn’t been able to really work on that in the preseason.”
The Presque Isle teams are now off until April 27 when they play at Houlton.
