It is getting on to spring pretty any minute now. After all, it is April 16, about time for spring to spring.
It wasn’t long ago that I was working in my study, looking out the window for spring to begin springing. There was still snow on the ground, which meant that winter was still fooling around with us. The drive was wet, because it was lightly raining out there. Spring was also fooling around with us.
Each time I go for a walk it seems a little more like spring and a bit less like winter. As I looked out a few days ago, I saw a six-foot snowdrift that is gone today. That’s the kind of winter I like.
It seems like just yesterday that snowdrift was six feet high. But that’s spring — or late winter — in Maine. Each day it changes, less snow and more warmth. And rain. Rain is good, because that makes it seem like spring.
Today the sun is out with no snow and no rain.
There’s a trail near here I want to get out on and walk. Spring walking in the woods is kind of nice. Plants of all types are sprouting, birds are singing, and once in awhile a mammal critter crosses my path. That’s spring walking in the woods.
I notice one neighbor still has a plastic across her windshield. She hasn’t been watching the weather change. Another has his windshield wipers sticking out from the windshield, so the snow won’t catch and hold them. He’s also not watching spring spring.
Hope they’re both wrong about the weather ahead.
But I am watching. That is, I’m watching spring spring. Our windshield is not covered, nor are out wipers sticking out as if spring was not yet sprung. And in a few minutes, I’ll be putting shoes on to head out for a short spring walk.
Can’t wait for that walk in the spring woods.
Well, I’ll have to wait a bit. It was too cold out there for a spring walk.
