LT. RICHARD FLOYD SHERMAN, KENNEBUNK – Lt. Richard Floyd Sherman, U.S. Navy (retired), 79, of Kennebunk, died April 11, 2017, at the Maine Veterans’ Home in Scarborough.
Dick, son of Floyd and Virginia (Longfellow) Sherman, was born June 19, 1937 in Hodgdon ME.

After graduating high school, Dick left the family farm and proudly served his country in the US Navy, retiring after a 21-year career that saw him rise to the rank of Lieutenant. During that time he also earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering from Northwestern University. After retiring from the Navy, he worked as Facilities Engineer at Textron for 20 years. On January 14, 2006, Dick married Joan L. Goulet Fitzpatrick.
Dick enjoyed gardening, summer theatre, reading and restoring antique farm tractors. He also loved family gatherings. He and Joan enjoyed travelling in their motorhome, particularly down to Florida for the winter. Dick was a member of the VFW, Disabled American Veterans and the Fleet Reserve Association.
During his career in the Navy, he served on several ships including the USS Barry, the aircraft carriers USS Shangri-La and USS Essex, and the USS Puget Sound. Dick was proud to be Certified for Surface Warfare and served in-country in Vietnam.
In addition to his parents, Dick was predeceased by his brother, David, his first wife, Mary and his stepson, Joseph Tufts.
Dick is lovingly remembered by his wife, Joan; his stepchildren, Kevin Fitzpatrick and his wife, Judy, of Dover, NH, Lisa Staffieri of Barrington, RI, Cynthia Roberge of Providence, RI, Georgianna Hastings and her husband, Everett, of Farmington, NH and Sue Dexter of Middleton, NH; his brother, Roger Sherman and his wife, Patricia of Hodgdon, ME; his sister, Bettie Colosimo of Grafton, OH; 11 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren, as well as many extended family members. He was especially close to his great granddaughter, Tiffany Seavey, whom he raised, and her daughter, Farrah Legere, both of Milton, NH.
Friends may visit on Wednesday, April 19, 2017 at Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer Street, Kennebunk, ME from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, April 20, 2017 at St. Martha’s Church, 30 Portland Road, Kennebunk. Interment with military honors on Friday, April 21, 2017 at 1:30 p.m. at the New Hampshire State Veterans Cemetery, 110 Daniel Webster Highway, Boscawen, NH.
