The people who were going to door-to-door in Presque Isle Wednesday were legitimate salespeople offering competitive electricity packages, according to the Presque Isle Police Department.
One of the men attracted the skepticism of Presque Isle resident Kimberly Sebold as she approached when preparing to leave for work April 19.
“I’m from Emera and want to talk to you about your price protection plan,” the man said, according to Sebold.
Sebold said she had to go to work and could not speak with him. Other sales people going door to door throughout Aroostook County also attracted suspicion and calls to the Aroostook County Sheriff’s Department.
On Thursday, some residents in Oakfield and Island Falls called and “reported that the sales representatives were very aggressive and persistent and made them uncomfortable,” the Sheriff’s Department said in a Facebook post.
Officials from the Sheriff’s Department made contact with the salespeople and determined that they are representatives from Think Energy, a retail company that offers Maine electricity customers different pricing options beyond the standard offer.
One of the salespeople was arrested on an outstanding arrest warrant for failure to appear in court, and later released, the Sheriff’s Department said.
Judy Long, a spokesperson for Emera Maine, said that the competitive price company was “neither a competitor nor partner” with Emera.
“While Emera Maine delivers the electricity used in homes and businesses, customers have a choice of who supplies that electricity,” Long said in a media release sent to clear up confusion. “Consumers can select a Competitive Electricity Provider or the Standard Offer Service.”
