Troop F Report April 4-9, 2017

HOULTON, Maine — The Maine State Police Troop F barracks in Houlton responded to 110 calls for service during the period of April 4-30.

Tuesday, April 4

– Tr. Casavant responded to a motor vehicle crash with injury on Route 163 in Mapleton. Information was received that a male and female had fled the crash prior to Tr. Casavant responding. Upon arrival, it was discovered that a female passenger was trapped in the car with injuries. She was later transported to The Aroostook Medical Center for non-life-threatening injuries. Through the course of the investigation, Tr. Casavant identified an Ashland man as the operator of the vehicle. He was also able to identify the second passenger as a female from Ashland. Tr. Casavant also learned the vehicle had been taken from the owner without permission in Ashland. Trooper Casavant located and charged the male with operating after revocation, leaving the scene of a personal injury accident, unauthorized use of property and violation of bail. Tr. Casavant also arrested the female on two outstanding warrants.

Thursday, April 6

– In September 2016, Tr. Nick Casavant responded to a residence in Mapleton reference a death investigation. A 41-year-old male was found deceased inside his residence. Evidence at the scene indicated the male’s death was possibly the result of an overdose of heroin and fentanyl. The Medical Examiner’s Office later ruled  the death as such. On April 6, after a lengthy investigation a 29-year-old Ashland man was indicted by a grand jury in Aroostook County on a charge of aggravated unlawful trafficking of schedule drugs resulting in death, a Class A crime in relation to the death. Tr. Casavant was assisted by the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency throughout the investigation.

Friday, April 7

– While conducting an investigation Sgt. Clark and Tr. Kilcollins located a 30-year-old Danforth man hiding in a home that had two active warrants for his arrest. The warrants were for unpaid fines totaling approximately $1,400. The man was taken to the Washington County Jail in Machias.

– Tr. Levesque stopped a vehicle in Mapleton for a traffic infraction. During the stop he discovered the inspection certificate affixed to the vehicle belonged to another vehicle. Tr. Levesque issued the owner of the car a criminal summons for permitting unlawful use (the owner loaned the vehicle to the driver) and for displaying a fictitious inspection certificate.

Sunday, April 9

– Tr. Stoutamyer was contacted by Caribou PD Officer Craig Peterson who asked if he could check the driveways in the area of Connor for a stolen motor vehicle. Tr. Stoutamyer located the vehicle in a driveway and called Off. Peterson who responded to the scene. Arrested for the theft were a 28-year-old female of Caribou, and her 34-year-old husband also of Caribou. Tr. Stoutamyer transported the female to the Caribou PD for Off. Peterson.

Monday, April 24

Presque Isle: While driving through Presque Isle Tr. Kilcollins observed what he suspected was a fictitious inspection certificate being displayed on a vehicle. Tr. Kilcollins followed the vehicle into a parking lot where he stopped it and spoke with the driver. The 69-year-old man admitted to Tr. Kilcollins that he made the inspection certificate from construction paper and taped it to his windshield. The man was issued a criminal summons for displaying a fictitious certificate of inspection.

Friday, April 28

Presque Isle: Presque Isle Police Department requested assistance with a traffic stop. There were two males in the vehicle and one was on probation with search and testing conditions. Tr Levesque responded and searched the man on probation. Tr. Levesque found methamphetamines in the man’s shoe. The man was arrested and taken to PIPD. The other man in the vehicle was arrested by the PIPD officer for operating after suspension.

Saturday, April 29

Mount Chase: Tr. Lilley was patrolling in Mount Chase and noticed the vehicle in front of him accelerating away. Tr. Lilley stopped the car for the speeding infraction. The 41-year-old male told Tr. Lilley his driver’s license is currently suspended due to a 2009 conviction for operating under the influence. The man was arrested for operating after suspension and he was issued a traffic summons for speeding. The man was taken to the Penobscot County Jail in Bangor.

St Agatha: Tr. Curtin attended a “Touch a Truck” event in St. Agatha. The event was geared to familiarize the general public and young children with law enforcement vehicles and personnel.

Presque Isle: Cpl. Michaud participated in an Autism Awareness event at the Presque Isle Middle School. There was a law enforcement area where members of the public could look over cruisers and ask questions of public safety personnel.

Sunday, April 30

Wallagrass: While patrolling Route 11, Wallagrass, Tr. Desrosier stopped a vehicle for exceeding the posted speed limit. After stopping the vehicle and identifying the driver, Tr. Desrosier found the man has current conditions of release which prohibit him from using or possessing liquor and he has a curfew. The 29-year-old man violated both conditions and was arrested.

Sherman: At approximately 9 p.m., 40-year-old Marvin Hostetler was driving a 1999 International tractor-trailer and was southbound on I-95 in Sherman while hauling a load of potatoes. Mr. Hostetler began to feel some heat in the cab of the truck and also smelled some fumes. Hostetler pulled over and got out of the truck. The vehicle was immediately engulfed by flames. Trooper Timmy Saucier, Staceyville Fire Department, and the Patten Ambulance responded to the scene. The interstate was closed for a short period of time while the fire was extinguished and debris cleared. There were no injuries in the crash, but the truck was completely destroyed.
