102 Years Ago – April 29, 1915

Dressmaking — Mrs. Effie Holmes and Mrs. A.J. Brown, dressmakers, had settled in their rooms in the Star-Herald block. They’re prepared to do all kinds of dressmaking, such as ladies’ suits and coats, children’s garments, etc., and solicit the patronage of the public in that line.

Order of Odd Fellowship — The 96th anniversary of the Order of Odd Fellowship was observed by Industry Lodge and Prosperity Rebekah Lodge, I. O. O. F. Both lodges met in a body at the Odd Fellows Hall and marched to the Baptist Church where they listened to a most inspiring and helpful sermon delivered by Rev. Edward B. Foster, pastor of that church.

75 Years Ago – April 23, 1942

Cook named chairman — At a meeting of the City Council, Councilman Sidney F. Cook was appointed as chairman of the civilian defense of the city, taking the place of city manager, Mark Trafton, who found it impossible along with his many other duties to continue as chairman of the defense work. G. Irving Brown, who was city coordinator under Mr. Trafton, continued his duties under Chairman Cook.

Title Miss Margaret Peaslee, home demonstration agent of the Extension Service, was the guest speaker at the Rotary Club luncheon, speaking on “Home Nutrition” emphasizing the value of proper food relationships in the diet. Guests were J.R. Gardiner, M.R. Gadrich, and John Laughlin, of New York City.

50 Years Ago – April 26, 1967

Lucky boy gets to see big game — Calvin Deschene, 13, son of Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Deschene, RFD 1, Presque Isle, a junior high student at Cunningham school, realized his fondest dream. He was the guest of Thomas Lavin Sr. on a flight to Montreal Forum to watch the Canadiens and Toronto Maple Leafs play their second game in the NHL finals. Calvin’s favorite team, the Toronto Maple Leafs, were the winners 3-0.

Washburn Lodge 193 dedicated new temple — Washburn Masonic Lodge 193 dedicated the new Temple located on Berce Street in Washburn. The dedication ceremony was performed by M. Donald Gardner, the grandmaster of the Grand Lodge of Maine and his Grand Lodge officers. The dedication was held in the presence of the members of Washburn Lodge and visiting Masons from all over the State. Present was the oldest living Past Master of Washburn Lodge, Percy Porter, 95. He was Master of Washburn Lodge in 1915-16.

25 Years Ago – April 22, 1992

In honor of physicians — The Aroostook Medical Center and Cary Medical Center held a joint physician appreciation night to introduce new doctors who have joined their staffs. David Peterson, TAMC chief executive officer, and Jack McCormack, Cary chief executive officer, were pleased with the turnout. A total of  15 physicians and one physician assistant joined the two medical staffs in the past year. They included: Maryann Kradzinski, M.D.; Carol Armatis, M.D.; Virginia Patriarca, M.D.; Dinah Tungol, M.D.; Andrew McDonagh, M.D.; Kenneth Lindahl, M.D.; Henry Litz, M.D.; Ann Lin, M.D.; Jose Tungol, M.D.; William Silber, M.D.; Lori Eckerstorfer, P.A.-C.; Bernardo Becker, M.D.; James Benjamin, M.D.; Gregory Cochran, M.D.; Wesley English, M.D.; and Gregory Rotz, M.D.

In the service — Airman Tara S. MacFarline, a 1989 graduate of Fort Fairfield High School, graduated from the dental assistant specialist course Sheppard Air Force Base, Wichita Falls, Texas. She was taught to assist dentists in all dental treatment procedures. Training included oral and dental anatomy, sterilization of instruments, preventative dentistry procedures and X-ray techniques.
