Fort Fairfield 8, Southern Aroostook 3 — At Fort Fairfield, Carter Bruce scattered nine hits and tossed the complete game as the Tigers beat the Warriors. Joe Bernard doubled and singled and Malcolm Langner singled twice for Fort Fairfield. Ryan Player legged out a triple.
Noah Altvater led Southern Aroostook of Dyer Brook with a double and two singles and Gavin Vining hit two singles.
Orono 3, Houlton 2 — At Orono, the Shires fell in their season-opener in extra innings. Shire Cam Graham started and went six and two-thirds innings before giving way to reliever Pat Howe.
“We played good defense, only one error and that runner did not score, and we pitched pretty well too,” Houlton coach Jim Castner said. “However, we did not hit enough. We put up two runs in the first and that was it. The reason we lost is because the ‘Baseball Gods’ were not on our side. We hit the ball on the screws five or six times right at Orono fielders. Also close calls did not fall our way.”
Castner said the team was unhappy with the loss, but were positive and are hungry for their next game.
“They knew it was unrealistic to go back-to-back 16-0 regular seasons, so they are not down,” he said. “I am confident we can be a dominant baseball team.”
The following games were slated to be played Wednesday, April 26 but now have make-up dates. Houlton at Caribou baseball and softball has been postponed to Thursday, at 4 p.m., while Ashland baseball and softball is scheduled to be at Southern Aroostook on Wednesday, May 3 at 3:30 p.m.
