BAR HARBOR, Maine — Local track and field athletes were able to compete for the first time this season Saturday. Caribou was on Mount Desert Island for a meet, while Fort Fairfield and Washburn were in Dover-Foxcroft.
The Viking girls won with 220 points, besting Old Town, MDI and three other schools.
Kendra Furber won two events for Caribou, taking the discus with a mark of 88 feet, 1 inch and the 1,600-meter racewalk in 9:19.62.
Picking up single individual victories were Jojo Fields in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 17.94 seconds, Willow Whitten in the 300-meter hurdles in 53.58 seconds, Alexis Rodriguez in the 800-meter run in 2:44.5 and Monica McLaughlin in the javelin with a mark of 92 feet, 5 inches.
Coach Roy Alden was particularly impressed with McLaughlin, who was competing in a track meet for only the second time in her career. She had post-season meet qualifying times in three different events.
With 159 points, the Caribou boys were second to MDI.
Bryce Coffin of the Vikes took the 1,600-meter racewalk in 8:19.06. Evan Desmond won the 3,200-meter run in 11:42.93 and Evan Michaud captured the pole vault by clearing 10 feet.
Lance Lagasse qualified in three throwing events.
“We had an excellent team effort,” Alden said. “Out of 207 different events competed in, we had 131 personal bests.
“This is a young team that is working hard and learning how to compete,” he added.
At Dover-Foxcroft, the Fort Fairfield girls placed sixth, with Jaydyn Fox picking up a win in the 100-meter hurdles in 21.29 seconds.
The Tigers boys came in fifth place in their meet.
