HOULTON, Maine — An artist from Woodstock, New Brunswick, will have her work featured at The Cup Cafe.
Susanne Hansen is exhibiting a collection of her work at The Cup Cafe gallery space at 61 Military St. The show opens on Saturday, May 13, with a “meet and greet the artist” from 6-7 p.m. Hansen will introduce her show and respond to questions about the exhibit. Food, coffee drinks from the espresso bar and specialty desserts will be available for purchase during the event.
Hansen has painted for almost her entire life. By the age of 12 she was working in oils and in her early 20s she discovered watercolour at a class with Esther Faulkner in Houlton and has since been intrigued at the complexities of the medium.
Although she has experimented some with still life, florals and portraiture, her true love is painting water, rocks and trees. She also enjoys architectural renderings of historic buildings, private homes, churches, hospitals, and schools.
The word “Malerkosten” is Danish for “The Paint Brush” and was chosen by Hansen, as the name for her studio, to honour her Danish heritage. Her artwork is displayed in private collections in Denmark, Germany, Scotland, across Canada and the United States.
Hansen also has displayed in exhibits at the University of Maine at Presque Isle, The Andrew and Laura McCain Gallery in Florenceville, Acanthus Gallery in Grand Falls, O’Toole Gallery in Grafton, Creek Village Gallery in Woodstock and the Connell House in Woodstock, as well as in a number of private exhibits. She has been a participant in “Paint the Heartland” since its inception, “Paint Houlton’s Heritage” for as long as it operated and the past two years has participated in “Paint the Past” at King’s Landing Historical Settlement in New Brunswick.
In recent years, Hansen has been working on a series of paintings of some of the historic and heritage buildings of the Woodstock area. Some of these buildings — the LP Fisher Hospital, The old Fire Station, the Carlisle Hotel and the old CPR Station, to name a few — have long since been demolished. There are currently 24 completed pieces and three more will soon be available. Once the public buildings are done she would like to do some of the Heritage homes in Woodstock.
