100 Years Ago – May 9, 1917
Moved— E. E. Morgan, who has been in Houlton five years, connected with the Metropolitan Insurance Company, left here Friday for Millinocket, where he is to reside in the future. Mr. Morgan was a valuable member of the Houlton band and his departure is a loss to that organization.
Visit — James Skehan, manager of the Western Union Telegraph office in this town, went to Bangor for a few days’ visit.
75 Years Ago – May 7, 1942
Captured prizes — The Houlton High School speakers brought back prizes for their school from speaking contests last weekend at Augusta and Waterville. Miss Edith Dickinson won third prize of $25 at the Lydia Spear State Speaking Contest finals at Augusta. Philip Boyne won second place in the Montgomery Contest at Colby College. His prize was $75. Both will speak in the Aroostook League Contest.
New position — Thomas A. Manion, for many years manager of the local Puritan Store, resigned his position Saturday of the past week and is now with the Quartermaster’s Corps at the Houlton Air Base.
50 Years Ago – May 10 , 1967
Prize — A 1967 Mustang will be given away by the Chester L. Briggs Post, American Legion, as the gate prize during their annual Fourth of July celebration in Houlton. The handsome red automobile will be on display throughout Houlton between now and the big holiday celebration.
Opening office — Dr. Richard B. McGraw, optometrist, announced the opening of his office in Mars Hill for the practice of optometry. The office is located in Mars Hill Town Office Building on the Fort Fairfield road.
25 Years Ago – May 6, 1992
Honeymoon plans — College of the Atlantic seniors Erica Desmond of Ludlow and Jeff Miller of Petersburg, Ill., will marry in June, prior to departing on a bicycle trip around the world. Jeffery was recently awarded a grant by the Thomas J. Watson Foundation to study bicycling policies of numerous countries during 1992 and 1993.
Winners — Sherman IGA recently sponsored a coloring contest as part of IGA frozen food month in Aroostook County. Winners from Sherman were Annette Paul, second place for Special Education, Amanda Guiggey, second place for nine-12 year olds and Kirby Robinson was third place winner for three-five year olds.
