Six Caribou players seeded for tennis singles regional

CARIBOU, Maine — The top eight seeds in both the girls’ and boys’ divisions of the Region 1 Tennis Singles Tournament have been announced, with members of the undefeated Viking teams dominating the list.

The event takes place Saturday, May 13, at Caribou High School beginning at 9 a.m.

The top three girls’ seeds are all from Caribou, with Gabrielle Marquis at No. 1, Kelly Nicklaus at No. 2 and Ashley Matlock at No. 3. All three have perfect records at this point in the season and both Marquis and Matlock were state qualifiers last year.

Presque Isle’s Sarah Morneault is the fourth seed, followed by Rebecca Mooers of Houlton at No. 5, Sarah Pelletier of Fort Kent at No. 6, Miranda Bragan of PI at No. 7 and Cassidy Lovely of Fort Kent at No. 8.

For the boys, the Vikes’ Alec Cyr, grabbed the top seed, with Andre Daigle of Presque Isle at No. 2, Travis Lebel of Van Buren No. 3 and Caribou freshman Parker Deprey at No. 4. Cyr made it into the state tourney last season.

Micah Charette of Fort Kent is fifth, Gabriel Rand of the Vikings sixth, Niko Naranja of Fort Kent seventh and Brandon Sytulek of Van Buren eighth.

The top four girls’ and boys’ finishers in Saturday’s tournament will advance to the Round of 48 state championships, to be held May 26 and 27 at Colby College in Waterville.
