PRESQUE ISLE, ME – Barbara Hews, 90, passed away Saturday evening December 3, 2016, at her home in Presque Isle.

She was born October 12, 1926, in Presque Isle, the daughter of Clement and Helen (Higgins) King. She graduated from Presque Isle High School in 1944, and worked as a secretary for Chester Kearney Accountants for several years. After marrying, Barbara became a partner in the family farming business.
In 1969 Barbara moved to the Washington, DC area where she became an active member of Maine State Society, co-chairing the national Cherry Blossom Princess Luncheon. Her faith was an important part of her life; she was active in several churches, including Grant Memorial United Methodist Church, Easton’s Methodist Church, and Trinity United Methodist Church in McLean, Virginia. Barbara was a Cub Scout and Girl Scout leader, member of the Katahdin Area Council, Sunday School Teacher, Choir Member, and member of the Hand Bell Choir. She was active in the United Methodist Women and served several years as chair of Mary Martha Circle. Barbara was also a long-time member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, Maine Epsilon Master. She was a Paul Harris Fellow award recipient and co-chaired with her husband, Eddie at the Cherry Blossom Festival events.
Barbara is survived by her husband of 71 years, Edward Hews of Presque Isle, a daughter Jane (Lockhart) and her husband Jay of Warson Woods, Missouri; two sons and their wives, Ray and Suzanne (Grant) Hews of Presque Isle, Mark and Debi (Hayden) Hews of Poland, Maine; a brother Richard King and his wife Irene of Presque Isle, a sister Jackie Haines and her husband Harold Jr. of Presque Isle; five grandchildren, Libby, Zachary, Erin, Alison, and Joshua; two great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
Barbara was predeceased by a half-brother Ted Coffin, sisters Dorothy Quass, Arlene Dicker, and Geraldine Wheeler, and a brother Clement King, Jr.
A memorial service will be held 11 a.m., Friday, May 12, 2017, at the Grant Memorial United Methodist Church with Rev. Chris Dare officiating. Immediately following the service a luncheon will be held in the church dining hall. Interment will be at Fairmount Cemetery, Presque Isle.
