PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — The Aroostook Band of Micmacs have re-elected some familiar faces and chosen some new ones to represent them in tribal government.
Micmacs voting at polls in Caribou, Presque Isle and Houlton on May 9, 2017 re-elected Chief Edward Peter Paul with 77 votes.
Richard Silliboy received 74 votes to defeat incumbent Jennifer Kiandoli to become the new vice chief of the tribe. She picked up 56 votes.
Dora Dow collected 63 votes to be re-elected to the tribal council. She will be joined by newly elected council members Christina Donnelly, 51 votes, and Brandon Getchell, 50 votes. Donnelly and Getchell will fill seats vacated by Silliboy and Norman Bernard, who ran for chief.
Elections are held every two years, but all positions that were filled are for four-year terms.
After polls closed at 7 p.m., deputies with the Aroostook County Sheriff’s Office transported the ballot boxes from Caribou and Houlton to be counted in Presque Isle.
Tribal clerk Melanie Davenport verified that 100 members voted at the tribe’s administration building in Presque Isle, 31 at the Caribou VFW and 25 at the Houlton fire station.
The Tribal Council meets every first and third Wednesday of every month in Presque Isle. The newly elected members will be sworn in on Wednesday, May 17.
The other four seats on the seven-member council are up for election in 2019.
