Drew, Flewelling earn Maine Sports Legends scholarships

Hodgdon’s Jessica Drew and Easton’s Jacob Flewelling are the Maine Sports Legends north region’s scholar-athlete recipients and both will be recognized with scholarships at the annual Hall of Honors induction banquet June 25 in Waterville.

Drew will graduate from Hodgdon High School as salutatorian with an academic average of 97.  The daughter of Mark and Melanie Drew participated in varsity soccer, basketball, softball and golf and served as a team captain for soccer, basketball and softball.

She was a member of the Houlton School of Dance, participated in band and club volleyball, was co-chair of the peer wellness team, made the National Honor Society, served as class treasurer and is involved in the Church of Good Shepherd youth group.

While attending high school, Drew earned 50 college credits through online courses. In the community, she participated in Operation Christmas Child, was a summer youth assistant golf coach, volunteered at Special Olympics and in Red Cross blood drives and served as a Sunday school teacher.

She will be attending the University of New England this fall, majoring in athletic training.

Jacob Flewelling will graduate from Easton High School third in his class, also with an academic average of 97.

He played varsity soccer, basketball and volleyball for the Bears and received many awards in soccer and basketball. He made the All-Aroostook team in soccer and received the Butch Shaw Award. His team won the Class D North MPA Sportsmanship Award. In basketball, he made the all-tournament team, the All-Aroostook team and became a 1,000-point scorer. His team was the recipient of the MPA Sportsmanship Award.

In academics, Flewelling was a consistent high honor student for four years, He was named student of the month, was inducted into the National Honor Society and competed on the math team.  He was class president for three years and student council president for two years.

Flewelling was in the Key Club, Spanish Club, the senior play, band and the yearbook staff and participated in junior exhibition. In the community and as a volunteer in school, he was a coach and referee at the Easton Recreation Department, served as a teacher’s aide and helped at the Presque Isle Humane Society.

He is the son of Brian and Lynn Flewelling and will attend the University of Maine at Presque Isle, majoring in criminal justice.
