CARIBOU, Maine — The Caribou Public Library have received a grant of $21,810.76 from the Roderick Living Trust, city councilor learned last week as they went through departmental reports.

“I think our jaws dropped when we saw it,” Library Director Anastasia Weigle said, explaining to councilors how she and library staffers were both surprised and grateful for the generous gift received on May 3. “We’re very appreciative, especially in a time of great need. This is a wonderful surprise.”

While the department report stated that the money would be placed in a bank certificate of deposit, Weigle said during the May 8 council meeting that the donation instead would be placed in a money market fund, as the money would still collect interest but there would be no penalty for early withdrawal.

The library’s report also told councilors about the addition of a Marvel database, which provides access to thousands of magazines, newspapers, and reference books; a partnership with the Aroostook County Genealogical Society; efforts to encourage library usage in the community; and a policy to have two employees on duty at all times, even during sick or vacation days.
