The Girl Scouts of Maine 2017 Awards Ceremony and Annual Meeting was held at the Augusta Civic Center on April 8, with about 300 people in attendance.
Katelyn Amero, a Cadette in Mapleton Troop 1133, was honored with the Silver Award for her Teen Mental Health “First Aid” project she completed in 2016.
While a student at Presque Isle Middle School, Amero recognized a need for help for students who had either suicidal thoughts or participated in self-injurious behavior. She wondered how their friends could help them and how they could find help. With the advice and guidance of staff of Maine School Administrative District 1, especially her project adviser Holly Vigue, she made available pamphlets, posters and a Power Point Presentation which are now being utilized at both Presque Isle Middle School and Presque Isle High School. The materials educate students on the issue and provide them with contact information for help.
Amero is now a Senior Girl Scout and will continue to update the information through her high school years so it is readily available for students in need.
The Silver Award is the highest honor a Cadette Girl Scout can earn. Girls must complete a Journey and a Silver Award Training prior to approval to do a project. The process starts with identifying an issue and how it could be solved. The candidate builds a team from the community or school on how to take action and develop the project. Once the project is approved, girls spend 50 hours of time putting it into action to make a difference.
Katelyn’s parents, Scott and Laurie Amero, were in attendance at the ceremony and are very proud of their daughter’s accomplishment.
