Meredith Mark “Whitey” Shapiro

PRESQUE ISLE, ME AND MIDDLETOWN, CT. – Meredith Mark “Whitey” Shapiro, passed away peacefully on May 12, 2017, at Spectrum Blodgett Hospital in Grand Rapids, MI.

He was 89 years old. Meredith (twin brother of Malcolm “Mac”) was born January 19, 1928, in Rockland, one of 6 children of Samuel Saul and Nettie (nee Schneider) Shapiro.
Meredith graduated Rockland High School, class of 1947, earning his varsity letter in basketball. Meredith continued to play basketball after graduation, even playing against the Harlem Globetrotters that same year. He joined the National Guard during the Korean War, and married his eternal love, Charlotte Matulsky, in June of 1956. Charlotte and Meredith were married for 54 years until the time of her death in February of 2011. Meredith and his brother Malcolm co-owned and operated Malmark’s Clothing Store, the family business in Presque Isle, until its closing. Meredith later worked as a salesman for Carroll’s Auto Sales until his retirement. Meredith was an active member in his community and a past member of the Presque Isle Lions Club. An avid golfer, he was a longtime member of the Presque Isle Country Club. He enjoyed the theater arts, and was an extremely accomplished artist who won numerous awards.
Meredith was a devoted father and is survived by daughters, Kerri (Shapiro) Logue and Stacey Shapiro (fiance, Steve Uckerman); granddaughters, Jessica Logue and Stephanie Logue; grandson Adam Logue; brother, Malcolm “Mac” Shapiro; sister, Elizabeth (Shapiro) Gopan; brother-in-law, Seymour Matulsky; sister-in-law, Jeanne Matulsky; as well as many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and his wife, Meredith was predeceased by sisters, Ida (Shapiro) Gopan and Esther (Shapiro) Jordan; and brother, Benjamin “Benny” Shapiro.
Friends and relatives of Meredith will meet at the Jewish Funeral Chapel, 118 Center Street, Bangor, on Wednesday, May 17, 2017, at 10:45 a.m. for a procession to graveside services at Beth Abraham Cemetery. A reception will follow at the Family Reception Center of Brookings-Smith Funeral Home, 163 Center Street, Bangor, at 12 p.m. to celebrate the life of Whitey Shapiro.
