AUGUSTA, Maine — Law enforcement agencies from across Maine joined forces in Augusta Thursday, May 18, 2017, to honor police officers who have died in the line of duty.
Dedicated on May 25, 1991, the Law Enforcement Officer’s Memorial in front of the Maine State Capitol now contains 83 names engraved in granite. Fifteen game wardens are on that memorial, more than any other branch of law enforcement in the state of Maine.
Thursday’s event follows that of the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C., at Judiciary Square. Each year on May 15 in Washington, D.C., a ceremony honors all law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty. In 2016, 145 U.S. police officers were among the fallen.
