PI student wins Gorman award

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — Northern Community College student Genesis Hart was awarded the Leon A. Gorman scholarship during a May 15 ceremony at the L.L. Bean Corporate Headquarters in Freeport.

Hart is one of seven across the Maine Community College System to receive the scholarship, which pays for a full year’s tuition.

The endowed scholarship was established in 2014 in honor of Gorman, the longtime president and CEO of L.L. Bean.  His wife Lisa Gorman expanded the scholarship last year to honor her late husband, so that a student on each campus of Maine’s community colleges could be awarded.

Hart, originally from Atlantic City, N.J., will be a senior in the business administration program this fall.  Hart was chosen for her strong academic achievement, financial need and commitment to community service.

“Genesis was an obvious choice for this award because of her involvement in the campus including yearbook staff, Student Senate and Phi Theta Kappa,” explained Dr. William Egeler, NMCC dean of students.  “She tutors fellow students and has a GPA of 3.6.  Additionally, Genesis has been accepted into the 2017 Maine NEW Leadership Summer Institute.  The Institute is a training program for students who are motivated to learn about the importance of women’s participation in public life.  We are thrilled that Genesis will benefit from this very generous scholarship.”

“Leon would be proud to be associated with these outstanding students,” said Lisa Gorman during the ceremony.  “We are pleased to support their educational aspirations and the good work of Maine’s community colleges.”

Derek Langhauser, president of the Maine Community College System, expressed his gratitude.

“Leon Gorman was passionate about the State of Maine.  His investments in Maine’s community colleges were emblematic of his desire to do all that he could to build a better, more prosperous future for Maine people.  These scholarships continue his remarkable legacy.”
