HOULTON, Maine — A Houlton man was indicted on multiple charges by the Aroostook County grand jury Thursday after he allegedly set fire to property belonging to two Houlton women in March and briefly escaped from police custody.
Zachary Cottle, 25, was indicted on charges of arson, domestic violence assault, domestic violence criminal threatening, criminal mischief, escape and aggravated criminal mischief, Aroostook County District Attorney Todd Collins said Thursday afternoon.
Cottle was among 30 people indicted this week by the grand jury during its fifth session of the year.
According to court documents, Cottle was charged with arson, a felony, after a March 8 incident in Houlton where he was accused of setting fire to property belonging to the two women.
Two days prior to that incident, he was charged with domestic violence assault, a misdemeanor, after “intentionally, knowingly or recklessly” causing injury to one of the women, according to court documents. He also was charged with misdemeanor domestic violence criminal threatening that same day for allegedly causing the same victim to be “in fear of imminent bodily injury.”
In addition, Cottle was charged with aggravated criminal mischief on March 8 for damaging a pillow and blanket, as well as siding and a window, property belonging to the two women. That same day, he was charged with escape for intentionally leaving police custody “prior to being transported or while being transported,” according to court documents.
