One day after suffering their first loss of the season, the Katahdin Cougar baseball team got back on the winning track Thursday in a game against RSU 50 rival Southern Aroostook. The Cougars scored early and often en route to a 16-3, five-inning victory over Southern Aroostook.

Cooper Drew pitched the win, yielding three earned runs on six hits and two walks, with eight strikeouts for Katahdin (9-1). The Cougars remain the top-ranked squad in the Class D North standings.

Southern Aroostook is now 3-4 on the season, but remains in the playoff hunt as the Warriors are currently ranked eighth in Class D North. The top 13 squads make the postseason.

For SA, Garrett Siltz, Hunter Walker, Hunter Lawlor and Nate Lilley shared mound duties. The group combined to yield 16 runs on 10 hits and four walks, with four strikeouts.

Brody Guiggey led Katahdin offensively with three hits, including a double, and scored four runs. Other Cougar repeat hitters were Drew (2 singles) and Zach Hagan (2 singles, 5 RBIs).

For the  Warriors, Lawlor had a double and single and drove in a run.

Friday’s only baseball and softball games are Washburn at East Grand, 4 p.m.

Saturday’s schedule of games feature: Ellsworth at Caribou doubleheader beginning at noon, Houlton baseball and softball at Limestone-MSSM, noon; and East Grand at Fort Fairfield, noon.

Caribou will host Ellsworth in tennis at noon.

Results from other baseball and softball games played Thursday were:

Fort Fairfield baseball 12, Fort Kent 2 — Carter Bruce struck out eight Warrior batters as the Tigers remained undefeated with another easy win.

Jon Bernard and Ryan Player each doubled and singled for Fort Fairfield, now 9-0. Nate Michaud, Aaron Plourde and Jared Soucy had the only hits for 3-6 Fort Kent.

LCS/MSSM softball 18, Washburn 1 — The Eagles ran their winning streak to six and the Beavers are still looking for their first victory after LCS/MSSM cruised in the Thursday matchup in Washburn.

Taylor Labreck had four hits, including a triple and a double, while Lasha Butler doubled and singled twice. Delaney Rossignol did not surrender a hit in notching the pitching victory for the 6-2 Eagles.

Fort Kent softball 10, Fort Fairfield 5 — Game details were not reported.

LCS/MSSM baseball 23, Washburn 5 — Game details were not reported.

In tennis, Presque Isle and Fort Kent split doubleheaders played at UMPI Thursday. All four scores were 3-2.

For the girls, the swing match came in No. 2 singles as the Wildcats’ Miranda Bragan won one match, 8-6, and lost the other in a tie-breaker, 9-8 (10-8) against Fort Kent’s Cassidy Lovely. PI’s Sarah Morneault and Hana Boucher prevailed in both their singles matches, while the Wildcats forfeited both doubles matches.

On the boys’ side, the Warriors took one match by sweeping singles play, with PI winning in doubles. The duos of Isaac Madore-Gage Young and Austin Moreau-Brandon McKnight claimed the Wildcats’ victories.

In the other, Presque Isle captured two of the three singles matches and split doubles to come out on top. Andre Daigle and Mason Young prevailed in singles, while Moreau and McKnight won their doubles match.

The Caribou tennis teams are now 10-0, while the Shires girls are 2-7 and the boys 0-9 after the Vikings won the home matches Thursday by identical 5-0 scores.
