102 Years Ago – May 27, 1915

Reopening school — At a meeting of the school board held in Hon. T. H. Phair’s office, it was voted to reopen the school in the Churchill District, near Fort Fairfield Junction. This school was closed five years prior and the small number of pupils conveyed to the Ross school. However, with several more pupils in the district, and their continuance in the Ross school would render it over crowded, so it was deemed advisable to again open the school.

Lunar Chapter delegate — Mrs. Evelyn DeWitt, an associate matron of the Lunar Chapter, was in Portland attending the Grand Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star as a delegate from Lunar Chapter.

75 Years Ago – May 21, 1942

New officer in charge — Colonel Raphael Baez, Jr., Army Air Corps, the new commander of the Presque isle Army Air Field took over the command May 7th. He succeeded Lt. Colonel Henry Weltmer, second in command.

Perham girl wins dress revue — Ruth Spear, member of the Salmon Brook 4-H Club of Perham, was the winner in the Northern Aroostook Style Dress Revue held

at the Presque Isle High School Auditorium May 16. Ruth had been a 4-H Club member for nine years. She had been a delegate to State 4-H Club Camp at Orono, delegate to Camp Vail at Springfield in 1941, assistant leader and leader of her 4-H Club. She was also blue ribbon winner in the Style Dress Revue the previous year.

50 Years Ago – May 24, 1967

Star-Herald to be Semi-Weekly — The Star-Herald planned on becoming a semi-weekly newspaper, early in June, publishing Saturdays as well as Wednesdays. The Saturday edition included a tabfold format, unlike the Wednesday edition continuing its normal format. The reason according to Star-Herald Editor Jonathan Von Ranson was to permit greater service to and coverage of Presque Isle and surrounding towns than was possible publishing only once a week.

Tigers roll past Caribou — In two separate track tri-meets held at Fort Fairfield, the Fort Tigers picked up two second places, one in each meet. In the first meet, it was Houlton with 62 points, Fort Fairfield with 45 points and Caribou tallied 36 points. For the second meet between Fort Fairfield, Caribou and Madawaska, Madawaska took the event with 62 points following by Fort with 49 points and Caribou with 32.

25 Years Ago – May 29, 1992

Sirois takes interim manager job — Jere Sirois, of Presque Isle’s personnel director, was named the city’s interim city manager, following the resignation of John Koelsch. Sirois, 38, of Easton, had been working for the city for over 20 years. As a condition of her accepting the interim position, Sirois was provided an extra $200 per week and a guarantee of job security for her personnel director position.

Appointed — Gordon Sprague, assistant manager of Maine Potato Growers, announced that Steve Doody of Washburn and a graduate of the University of Maine-Orono with a BS degree in biological sciences, was appointed to manage the MPG Shopping Center, a diversified hardware facility that also distribute building materials, household appliances, lawn and garden equipment and greenhouse products.
