Houlton girls tennis eying playoffs

HOULTON, Maine — The spring schedule is winding down for the Houlton boys and girls tennis teams, as the regular season is rapidly coming to a close. Just two more matches remain for both Shire teams — a home doubleheader against Madawaska Wednesday, May 24.

The Houlton girls team is 3-7 on the season and is currently ranked fifth in the Class C North standings by the Maine Principals’ Association. If the Shires remain as the fifth seed, the girls would play in a preliminary match on Tuesday, May 30.

Houlton’s boys team is 0-10 on the season following a pair of close losses to Fort Kent on May 16 and a loss to Van Buren on May 17. The Shires are not in the playoff picture this season.

The following is a recap of matches played through Monday.

Van Buren boys 4, Houlton 1 — At Houlton May 17, the individual results were: in singles, Travis Lebel (VB) defeated Nolan Porter, 8-5; Brandon Sytulek (VB) beat Owen Gallop, 8-1; and Brenton Soucy (VB) bested Devin Ivey 8-2. In doubles, Jaron Gentle and Isaac Vega (H) defeated Luc Perrault and Dominic Belanger, 8-2; and Skyler Paradis and Manny Deschaine (VB) beat Tim Youngfellow and Nate DeLucca, 8-5.

Houlton girls 3, Van Buren 2 — At Houlton May 17, the individual results were: in singles, Rebecca Mooers (H) defeated Erica Ouellette, 8-1; Sydney Lorom (H) beat Lindsey Gendreau, 9-7; and Tiffany Morrow (VB) bested Maddie Grant, 8-4. In doubles, Nadja Messerschmidt and Tessa McCormick (H) defeated Emma LaJoie and Kaila Roy, 8-2; and Emilia Nicknair and Amanda Nicknair (VB) bested Emily Miller and Carolyn Hannigan, 8-5.

Fort Kent boys 3, Houlton 2 — In a doubleheader played at the University of Maine at Presque Isle May 16, the individual results were: in singles, Nolan Porter (H) beat Micah Charette, 8-2; Niko Naranja (FK) beat Owen Gallop, 8-0; and David Roy (FK) bested Devin Ivey, 8-2. In doubles, Reece Voisine and Johnny Blanchette (FK) defeated Issac Vega and Jaron Gentle, 9-7; and Tim Youngfellow and Nate Delucca (H) beat David Ouellette and Parker Jandreau, 8-0.

Fort Kent boys 3, Houlton 2 — In the second contest, results were: in singles: Porter defeated Charette, 8-4; Naranja beat Gallop, 8-4; and Roy bested Ivey, 8-2. In doubles, Voisine and Blanchette defeated Vega and Gentle, 8-3; and Youngfellow and Delucca defeated Ouellette and Jandreau, 8-1.

Fort Kent girls 3, Houlton 2 — In a doubleheader played at UMPI May 16, the individual results were: in singles, Rebecca Mooers (H) defeated Sarah Pelletier, 8-6; Sydney Lorom (H) beat Cassidy Lovley, 8-2; and Syndi Pelletier (FK) bested Maddie Grant, 8-4. In doubles, Isabelle Charette and Autumn Bouchard (FK) defeated Nadja Messerschmidt and Tessa McCormick, 8-1; and Lexi Lovely and Hannah Daigle (FK) beat Emily Miller and Carolyn Hannigan, 8-5.

Houlton 3, Fort Kent 2 — In the second match of the day, the Shires picked up their first win of the season. Results were: in singles, Mooers beat Pelletier, 8-4; Lorom defeated C. Lovely, 8-6; and Grant bested Pelletier, 8-3. In doubles, Charette and Bouchard, defeated Messerschmidt and McCormick, 8-1; and L. Lovley and Daigle  beat Miller and Hannigan, 8-5.
