The campground at Aroostook State Park is open and park manager Scott Thompson is optimistic that some good weather may draw visitors to the park for the Memorial Day weekend.
Aroostook State Park opened its campground on May 15 and has since hosted several groups of campers, Thompson said.
The park already has reservations for the long weekend, and Thompson said if the weather is right, more campers may turn out.
“A lot of what we offer is due to mother nature. If the weather’s good we’re busy,” Thompson said.
“For us, typically we can see cool temperatures in late May.”
This weekend, the forecast is calling for partly cloudy skies and high temperatures in the upper 60s Saturday and Sunday, with rain expected Monday.
Last year, the state park saw fewer campers in late spring due to lingering wetness, Thompson said. On average about 4,000 people camp at the park from May through October.
The campground features 30 wooded campsites located at the base of Quoggy Jo Mountain near Echo Lake, with showers and a kitchen facility. The campground hosts, Bonny and Edgar Ally of Mapleton, help guide campers and oversee the kitchen.
The state park also has two group camping areas on the other side of the mountain, and a camping shelter along a lookout on the mountain.
