Playoffs likely for PI tennis teams

The Presque Isle tennis teams wrapped up their regular season Tuesday, May 23, 2017 by hosting Caribou. The Wildcat girls and boys both appear on the verge of qualifying for the Class B North playoffs, which begin with the preliminary round next Tuesday, May 30.

The Wildcat boys are currently in eighth place with their 7-4 record, while the girls are in ninth and own a 6-5 mark. The top 12 move on to the postseason.

Sarah Morneault and Andrew Daigle are both preparing for the state singles tournament, to be held at Colby College in Waterville beginning Friday, May 26. Both qualified at the Region 1 tourney in Caribou May 13.

Morneault matches up against Natalie Tilton of Mattanawcook and for the boys, Daigle plays Rudi Schnetzer of Belfast. Both are in the Round of 48 portion of the tourney.

In the latest team match, the Houlton girls handed PI a 3-2 loss. Morneault won in first singles and Anna Robinson and Gabby Haley took the No. 1 doubles match for PI’s victories on the day.

The PI boys prevailed, 4-1, with Daigle, Jordan Bonville and Mason Young sweeping their singles matches and Gage Young and Isaac Madore coming out on top in first doubles.

The Wildcat girls and boys both split with Fort Kent in a home doubleheader Thursday. Two days earlier, the PI teams were both beaten at Mount Desert Island.
