CARIBOU, Maine — Local police arrested a Caribou Career and Technical Center teacher on sexual assault charges on May 26 after receiving a complaint from officials with the school district.
Colby Conroy, 22, of Woodland was charged with gross sexual assault, unlawful sexual touching, and sexual abuse of a minor.
Caribou Police Chief Michael Gahagan said investigators determined that Conroy “had a sexual relationship with a juvenile student.” He did not say if the alleged victim had been a student of Conroy’s or attended classes at the technical center.
Conroy was an at-will teacher, meaning he didn’t have a contract, according to RSU 39 Superintendent TIm Doak. The center serves students from all over Aroostook County.
Due to the nature of the incident, Doak said he could not comment further.
Gahagan said officers arrested Conroy on the same day that the police department received the complaint.
“We were right on it as soon as they reported it,” the chief said. “We asked him to come in and arrested him here at the police department. The matter was resolved within a few hours.”
Conroy made his initial appearance in Caribou District Court on May 26, according to a court clerk, and was transported to the Aroostook County Jail.
Conroy’s bail is set at $600 cash or $10,000 surety. His next hearing is scheduled for Oct. 5 at the Caribou court.
