The Presque Isle tennis teams’ post-season was short lived as both were eliminated in the Class B North preliminary round Tuesday, May 30.
The boys, seeded seventh, lost at home to No. 10 Medomak Valley of Waldoboro, 5-0. The Wildcats’ No. 1 singles player Andre Daigle split the first two sets with his opponent before falling in the third, while in the other four matches, Medomak won in straight sets.
Richard Kinney defeated Daigle, 6-1, 4-6, 2-6. PI’s Jordan Bonville and Mason Young both lost their singles matches in straight sets, with Young forcing a tie-breaker in the second set.
“The singles matches were really even and came down to a point here and there,” said PI coach Brian Massey.
The Wildcat duos of Gage Young-Isaac Madore and Austin Moreau-Brandon McKnight fell in doubles.
“[Medomak’s] doubles teams were very strong having played together for four years, so they had lots of experience,” Massey added.
Presque Isle finished its season with a 7-6 overall record.
“We played this season for the experience as we lacked a ton of it,” Massey said. “We knew that in our situation we had to grind out points, games and matches just to get into the tournament and we managed to do that.”
The Wildcat girls made the trip to Bar Harbor and were beaten by MDI, 4-1. Presque Isle’s only win came in third singles as freshman Hana Boucher beat India Jones, 6-3, 7-5.
Sarah Morneault lost her first singles match to Ellie Bridgers in straight sets and the second one in a tie-breaker. Miranda Bragan also lost a pair of 6-3 sets to Delaney Smith of the Trojans.
In the only other contested match, PI’s Anna Robinson and Gabby Haley were defeated in No. 1 doubles. The Wildcats forfeited the second doubles match.
“My goal was to finish the regular season at .500, which we accomplished, and another was to have at least one player make it to the state singles tournament, which Sarah did,” coach Monica Bearden said.
Boucher finished with a 9-3 overall record and Morneault, the lone senior on the team, went 8-4. Presque Isle, the 11th seed, finished 6-7 as a team.
