JOHN DURAN JR. ORIENT – John Duran Jr., 86, passed away on Tuesday, May 23, 2017, surrounded by his loving family at his home in Orient. John was born on August 30, 1930, in Price Hill, West Virginia, the son of John and Mary (Vargo) Duran.
John was a graduate of Mount Hope High School. He served four years in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. While in service to his country he met the love of his life, Dorothy Ann Callnan. They were married for 48 years. John operated Duran Oil Co. for many years and was a licensed furnace technician as well. He designed and constructed Durfo Mobile Home Park. He also was a co-owner and operator, with his wife, of Dot’s Family Restaurant, in Houlton, Maine.
He loved spending time with family and friends, at Deering Lake. He enjoyed sports, he played football in High School and was a dedicated New England Patriots fan. He loved music (especially polka), dancing, and even played the accordion.
His wife and family was the most important part of his life. John is survived by seven children; Bernadette Knudson and her husband Patrick of Malabar, FL, Sue Bryne and her husband, Stanley of Chelsea, Linda Brown and her Husband, Ryan of Gray, John S. Duran and his wife, Patricia of Brewer, Patricia Kennedy and her Husband, James of Alton, Diana Grondin and her husband, Christopher of Raymond, Joseph E. Duran and his wife, Tina of Saco; 14 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren and growing; two brothers Paul and Joseph Duran and one sister Sandy Duran Lawrence.
Friends called 10 a.m. Saturday May 27, 2017, at St. Mary of the Visitation Church where a Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 11 a.m. with the Rev. David Raymond celebrant. Interment with military honors took place at St. Mary’s Cemetery behind the church. The family invited relatives and friends to a time of refreshment at the church fellowship hall following the interment.
