DOVER FOXCROFT, Maine — Track athletes from Houlton joined others from around the region for the Penobscot Valley Athletic Conference championship Monday, May 29, at Foxcroft Academy.

Several Shires posted exceptional times at Monday’s meet. Isaiah Brown (3,200, 1,600) and Tim Glatter (javelin) were among the top boys performers, while Mia Hanning (100, 200) was tops for the girls.

The Shires, as well as Greater Houlton Christian Academy, are gearing up for states this Saturday, also at Foxcroft Academy.

Houlton athletes participating at states, and the events they will compete in, include Hannah Foley (discus), Mia Hanning (100, 200), Mackenzie Hunt (100, 400), Austin Brown (high jump, 100, 200), Tim Glatter (javelin) and Isaiah Brown (1,600, 3,200).

GHCA athletes participating at states, and the events they will compete in, include Teagan Ewings (1,600), Wesley Ganglfinger (1,600) and Cole Winslow (110 hurdles).

At Monday’s PVC meet, Houlton coach Chris Rines said he was pleased with the effort the Shires put forth.

“Isaiah had some fantastic races today, going back and forth with some very talented runners,” Rines said. “It was the toughest he has faced all year. I’m not sure the No. 1 seed in the 1,600 (John Hassett of George Stevens Academy) was anticipating much competition in the race but it was really exciting to see Isaiah run with the number 1 and push him.”

A similar scenario played out in the 3,200 meter race between Hassett, Brown, Orono’s John Fandel and Deer Isle’s Brendan Penfold, which helped push Brown to a new personal best and third-place finish.

Rines also noted the performance by Glatter in the javelin.

“Tim took an early lead in the javelin as his first throw of 148-feet, 6 inches was his longest on the day,” Rines said. “It really put the pressure on the rest of the field. Tim throws well in Foxcroft and he proved that by hitting a new [personal record] right off the bat.”

Hanning also made it onto the podium in every event she competed in. Hanning placed fourth in the 100 meter; was fifth as part of the 4×100 relay team; third in the 200; and sixth in shot put.
